Kyushu Trip Day 3: Fujimoto Onsen Spa

Fujimoto is a traditional Japanese Onsen spa, located a little off of famous Kurokawa Onsen.  We just love this place for many qualities and this is our third visit.

Just see some photos of this beautiful spa.

They got only 8 rooms.  We’ve got a Japanese style room, but some rooms have beds.

The rates depend on the seasons and dates, but it’s about JPY20,000 per night per person, including dinner, breakfast and of course Onsen.  We can’t afford to stay for several days, but we find it worth to travel all the way and stay even just for 1 day.

We go straight to Onsen spa!

There are main baths, separate for male and female.  They each have 1 bath indoor, 2 outside (different temparatures), and 1 right on the river outside.  They are different layouts.  So they switch male and female the next morning.

There are also 4 private baths.  Families and groups can use privately.  The picture above is one of the private baths that we like the most.

Just kick back and enjoy the natural hot spring, soft and soothing to the skin, cool breeze through the forrest and the sounds of the river.

Good water, good rice, of course Kumamoto has some nice Sake.

Kumamoto is traditionally famous for producing horse for food.  Sashimi is excellent.  The fat melts at lower temperature than beef, the month has enough temperature to melt it.  Delicious.

Chicken sashimi was also excellent.  Chicken sashimi or tataki (heating the surface only) is very common throughout Kyushu.  The process of butchery and cooking is strictly controlled  for sashimi eating.

Tempura with local and seasonal veggies and wild plants.

Yamame Trout, char-grilled.

fujimoto20160232

Steamed Higo beef and Rindo Pork.  Both are brand meat of Kumamoto.

Good food.  Good friends.  Good life.

It snowed during the night.  And it cleared in the morning.

And the outside bath felt even better in a chilly morning air.

It’s a buffet style with lots and lots of local, traditional, and hearty dishes of local goodies.  We just love this breakfast here.
