It was late afternoon in a hot day. We came to Sans Souci in Kita Nakagusuku.
We bumped into the owner, Ganta-san.
It was 14:30. They stop serving lunch meals at 15:00. Starts dinner at 17:30. They serve only sweets in the afternoon between.
They were going to close for the day at 15:00 this day.
This place is always crowded with long line at lunch time. But now only a couple of people waiting. Slipping ourselves in for our lunch.
Here’s the co-owner and main chef, Makoto-san.
At lunch time, you can add JPY300 for drink and a side dish to your meal order.
YuYu got macha and I got Hojicha. Hojicha is deeply roasted Japanese tea.
YuYu got Sans Souci specialty, Curry Udon.
Agoo Pork. Original blend of spices and sesame paste in Kyoto style clear Japanese broth. Creamy, spicy (not hot), complex flavors in unity.
I wanted to go light. Cold Udon with Sesami dipping sauce. Feels perfect for a hot day.
The side dish of the day.
NOW, this is what I came here for today.
Macha shaved ice, with ice cream and anko (sweet azuki beans), JPY700.
I just love this shaved ice here. Standing tall, waiting for the picture to be taken.
It’s made of real macha. No artificial crap. Fresh, deep, bitter sweat. Macha is blended into the ice, finely shaved.
For Anko, I definitely like Cafe Miyabi Chaya better. But over all, this shaved ice is just phenomenal.
The first page of the menu. It reads, “Sans Souci is a dining cafe.”
It’s a strong statement that this place is not just for sweets, not just for Udon, not just a restaurant, but it’s a stylish cafe with quality food. And it really is.
